Thabang Ledwaba

Thabang Ledwaba is a South African software engineer and software delivery lead at BET Software who applies systems thinking to enterprise engineering, artificial intelligence, and access to technical careers. His central concern is whether technology addresses genuine human needs—and whether African communities can shape the systems increasingly influencing their economic future.

Raised in Soweto, Ledwaba initially studied medicine before his fascination with medical equipment and sensors drew him into computing. He graduated from the University of Johannesburg in 2014 with a degree in computer science and informatics, then worked across financial services, insurance, and telecommunications.

At BBD Software, his responsibilities spanned software development, technical leadership, research and development, graduate mentorship, and executive work. He supported the Ukukhula Bursary Fund, which helps disadvantaged students pursue IT degrees, and collaborations with Umuzi and the Kariega Foundation combining technology exposure, remote training, stipends, and employment pathways.

He subsequently joined BET Software, where his delivery work addresses misaligned incentives, hidden dependencies, and the gap between polished operational metrics and meaningful customer outcomes. His approach extends into several distinctive priorities:

  • Problem-first software delivery: Before introducing automation or autonomous agents, teams must determine whether they are solving the right problem. Faster execution cannot rescue an objective disconnected from business or customer value.
  • Public services redesigned around existing information: Instead of adding ticketing systems or appointments to identity-document queues, Ledwaba proposes using birth records and known eligibility thresholds to initiate applications automatically—a redesign of the process, not a claim that such a system already exists.
  • African participation in the AI economy: His AI Engineer World’s Fair presentation champions locally grounded experimentation and positions African innovators as producers and decision-makers. He cites M-PESA as evidence of African fintech ingenuity without misrepresenting it as artificial intelligence.
  • Human judgment in AI-assisted engineering: His work on software craftsmanship emphasizes deliberate architecture, useful abstractions, and professional accountability as coding assistants accelerate development.

Ledwaba connects these priorities to ubuntu and locally relevant innovation: building technology that serves communities while expanding who gets to participate in creating it.
