John Pham is a product design engineering manager at Vercel who builds fast, accessible interfaces for developer tools and computing infrastructure. His central conviction is that AI makes features easier to reproduce, increasing the importance of how software actually feels to use.
Earlier in his career, Pham worked on Microsoft Edge and at NASA before joining Highlight, where he explored web-application compression and created animated product updates. At Vercel, he became a lead design engineer and helped establish design engineering without handoffs: designers and engineers develop interactions together in working code, maintaining responsibility from early exploration through production. He coauthored Vercel’s account of that approach and built nested menus that predict pointer movement, making difficult navigation follow user intent.
Pham subsequently led design at San Francisco Compute, applying those principles to GPU-cloud onboarding and purchasing. American export-compliance requirements introduce identity checks and other friction into cloud-infrastructure sales; he designed onboarding that explains those requirements, displays progress, suggests appointment times, and distinguishes engineering qualification from sales calls. By the 2026 AI Engineer World’s Fair, he was again affiliated with Vercel as manager of product design engineering.
Product principles
- Performance shapes trust. Pham combines server-side rendering, caching, small assets, and restrained JavaScript with Core Web Vitals to keep interfaces responsive and visually stable.
- Accessibility reduces cognitive load. His forms use progressive disclosure, semantic labels, browser autofill, screen-reader support, local time zones, and reduced-motion preferences to make demanding workflows easier to complete.
- Expressive interfaces can stay lightweight. His San Francisco fog effect layers and animates a single small cloud image without third-party JavaScript; an illustrated GPU-purchasing interface uses ordinary browser elements and lightweight video instead of expensive visual machinery.
- Customer care belongs inside the product. Buyers can choose familiar time units, and the interface surfaces better available prices even when doing so reduces immediate revenue.
For Pham, human-centered design in the AI era extends beyond screens to APIs, documentation, error messages, and every other interaction shaping whether software feels understandable, trustworthy, and worth remembering.
