Benjamin Dunphy is the cofounder, VP of Sales, and Creative Director of AI Engineer, which he launched with Shawn “swyx” Wang to bring together engineers building practical AI applications. He oversees sponsorships, partnerships, and creative direction for an organization that grew from a 500-person inaugural summit into an international conference community.
Dunphy began organizing frontend meetups in San Francisco and New York in 2014. He became a principal at Real World React, founded Reactathon, and built Jamstack Conf for Netlify, producing seven Reactathon conferences and the first four in-person Jamstack Conf events. He also founded EventLoop, an events-production company and platform for hybrid and remote gatherings, and organized a 2022 QCon frontend-engineering track examining composition, reuse, developer velocity, and performance.
In October 2023, Dunphy and Wang launched the first AI Engineer Summit in San Francisco. The conference attracted engineers, founders, infrastructure companies, and developer-tool providers defining the emerging AI engineering field. By June 2024, the AI Engineer World’s Fair had expanded to more than 3,000 participants; AI Engineer subsequently developed flagship conferences and independently organized regional events.
- AI-assisted attendee matching. Dunphy introduced Network, a conference application combining schedules, exhibitor details, local recommendations, and attendee discovery. Its Generative Matching Algorithm used language models to introduce participants based on problems they identified in their profiles. He announced that the application and matching system would be open-sourced, crediting Simon Sturmer for the mobile application and Suizette Steller for the matching implementation.
- Clearer pathways into conference speaking. After reviewing more than 160 Reactathon submissions, Dunphy outlined a practical framework for stronger talk proposals: identify the subject, define a concrete problem, establish a credible solution, and explain what the audience will learn. He treats writing, rehearsal, and attention to audience value as practical routes into technical speaking.
