QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey combines data science, engineering, design, and AI strategy to help clients put machine learning, generative AI, and agents into business workflows. James O. McKinsey founded the firm in Chicago in 1926; Bob Sternfels is its global managing partner. McKinsey acquired QuantumBlack in 2015, extending its work in advanced analytics and engineering. QuantumBlack’s lasting software contributions include Kedro, an open-source machine-learning framework released publicly in 2019, and CausalNex, an open-source library for cause-and-effect modeling. Its QuantumBlack Labs develops tooling and domain-specific AI capabilities, including infrastructure for orchestrating large-scale agent deployments.
The firm combines management advice with hands-on technical implementation. In 2025, McKinsey reported that QuantumBlack operated across more than 40 offices and supported hundreds of client deployments annually, while QuantumBlack Labs had more than 200 specialists. Its approach connects shared platforms and engineering standards with industry expertise across life sciences, manufacturing, energy, and financial services, emphasizing integration and adoption alongside model performance.
