Shawn Chan

Shawn Chan is a cross-border investor focused on whether artificial intelligence can produce financial analysis trustworthy enough to guide investment decisions. His standard is the investment-committee-ready memo: a document whose evidence, numbers and assumptions survive scrutiny before capital changes hands.

Chan has worked on mergers and acquisitions, public offerings and strategic investments across Hong Kong, mainland China, the United Kingdom and the United States. He previously served as Head of Investment at A.S. Watson Group, part of CK Hutchison. At AI Engineer World’s Fair 2026, he was listed as Vice President at China Resources Holdings, leading a consumer-sector fund. His investment experience includes Oatly, Airbnb, SenseTime, Moore Threads, Leapmotor and EVE Energy.

The investment memo as an AI stress test

Drawing on approximately 200 investment-committee meetings, Chan argues that financial AI should be judged by whether its work survives due diligence:

  • Source-weighted evidence: Audited filings and official disclosures should outrank analyst notes, informal messages and speculation.
  • Visible contradictions: Differences between management statements and regulatory filings should trigger human investigation, not disappear into a smoother narrative.
  • Numerical consistency: Revenue figures and other financial data must agree across summaries, tables and supporting documents.
  • Traceable claims and explicit uncertainty: Consequential assertions should link directly to their evidence, with forecasts and assumptions clearly distinguished from established facts.
  • Human approval and audit trails: An identifiable decision-maker must review the analysis, authorize its use and record significant changes.

Chan evaluates these systems as an investor, not their developer. He applies the same evidentiary standard to founders seeking capital: claims made in a pitch must withstand comparison with the underlying data room.
