Reid Mayo

Reid Mayo is an AI engineer, entrepreneur, and founder of re:ma AI who helps software teams build measurable, production-ready AI systems. An early member of OpenPipe, he specializes in agent evaluation, custom models, and translating machine-learning techniques into practices familiar to full-stack engineers.

Mayo previously helped build Swarm Solutions and grew an engineering-services company to 25 people. By the 2023 AI Engineer Summit, he had founded re:ma AI and developed a practical curriculum for experienced developers entering AI without a machine-learning background. His full-stack-to-AI engineering guide progresses from transformer fundamentals and prompting to model APIs, retrieval, evaluation, and fine-tuning; he recommends using ChatGPT as a Socratic tutor and studying LangChain’s Python and JavaScript documentation together.

At OpenPipe, his attention shifted toward custom models, post-training, and the operational demands of deployed AI products. He describes fine-tuning data as structured input-output examples that application developers can understand through familiar chat-message formats.

  • Evaluations as product infrastructure. Mayo treats evaluations as software tests for probabilistic systems: inspect production logs, monitor unexpected outcome distributions, and test retrieval and tool calls independently.
  • Explicit confidence thresholds. He designs around acceptable failure rates and human supervision, arguing that an AI assistant becomes valuable when its reliability clears the threshold needed to improve someone’s work. His approach to application confidence treats uncertainty as a product constraint.
  • Structured agent observability. Detailed records of model calls and workflow steps support debugging, evaluation, and future training; his writing on agent logging connects production telemetry directly to model improvement.
  • Specialization after real-world validation. He favors prototyping with hosted models, then considering smaller fine-tuned alternatives when usage exposes meaningful cost, latency, privacy, or control requirements.

With fellow early OpenPipe team member Jam Hermio, Mayo also launched VirtualCyborgs, an initiative to train AI-enabled generalists for startup operations. The venture subsequently shut down.
