Kevin Van Gundy

Conference affiliation: Hypermode · 2024

Kevin Van Gundy is chief revenue officer of DigitalOcean, responsible for commercial strategy as the cloud provider expands into AI inference and agentic workloads. Previously chief executive of Hypermode and chief operating officer of Vercel, he specializes in bringing technically sophisticated infrastructure to developers and enterprise customers.

After early work in finance and consulting, Van Gundy entered the developer-tools business at Neo4j, developing expertise in graph databases and technical sales. Roles at Tray.ai and Domino Data Lab broadened his experience across enterprise automation and data-science infrastructure.

At Vercel, he served as chief revenue officer before becoming chief operating officer, helping translate adoption of Next.js and modern web infrastructure into enterprise growth. He coauthored the introduction of Vercel’s agency partner program and experts marketplace, connecting customers with specialized implementation partners.

As Hypermode’s chief executive, Van Gundy brought Dgraph Labs into the company, combining graph-database infrastructure with tools for integrating models and application data. Hypermode’s projects included Modus, an open-source framework for building agentic flows. He also championed opening Dgraph’s enterprise features and introducing serverless deployment, making knowledge graphs more accessible to AI developers.

His 2024 AI Engineer World’s Fair appearance illustrated three defining technical priorities:

  • Rapid iteration without architectural lock-in: Developers should add AI incrementally, exchange models easily, and revise prompts or application architecture as real-world requirements emerge.
  • Knowledge graphs and integrated retrieval: Bringing application data, embedding, and search closer to the model layer can reduce coordination among separate services and simplify retrieval-augmented generation.
  • Production-grade inference observability: Inference tracing and comparisons across models and configurations make unpredictable behavior easier to inspect, evaluate, and improve.

Van Gundy joined DigitalOcean as chief revenue officer in June 2026, extending his developer-infrastructure background into the commercial expansion of AI-focused cloud services.
