João Moura is the founder and chief executive of CrewAI, whose open-source agent orchestration framework coordinates specialized software agents inside business workflows. His work focuses on making multi-agent orchestration reliable enough for production, combining autonomous judgment with explicit controls over execution, security, and governance.
Moura began programming as a teenager in Brazil and worked at a digital agency while still in high school. After engineering work at Preview Design, he left law school to pursue technology full-time. In 2014, he became chief technology officer of Palpiteros, a Brazilian soccer social-networking startup, before moving into remote engineering roles with international companies.
At Clearbit, he built distributed engineering teams and worked on data-activation products, including automated audience generation. He later served as director of AI engineering and developed enterprise AI products through Clearbit’s acquisition by HubSpot. His earlier open-source projects include Machinery, an Elixir state-machine library, and Gioco, a Ruby on Rails gamification project.
CrewAI began when Moura built agents to draft professional posts, then recognized that similarly coordinated systems could handle broader operational work. He applied the framework inside his own company: marketing crews divided research, social analysis, writing, and editorial review; sales crews researched prospects, checked customer data, and prepared meeting briefs. His AI Engineer World’s Fair appearance also outlined agent-assisted documentation, shared memory, training, interoperability, and production deployment.
In October 2025, CrewAI OSS 1.0 introduced stable interfaces for agent crews and workflows alongside built-in execution tracing. CrewAI also developed CrewAI AMP, an enterprise layer for deployment, observability, access controls, and security. By July 2026, Moura had introduced Crew Studio, extending agent development to business and technical teams while preserving code ownership and centrally governed deployment.
- Specialized agents need operational roles. Moura organizes agents around concrete responsibilities—researching prospects, drafting material, reviewing output—so multiple capabilities contribute to a complete business process.
- Autonomy belongs inside controlled workflows. CrewAI combines role-based collaboration with event-driven agent workflows, explicit state management, conditional execution, and human approvals, reserving autonomous judgment for steps that genuinely need it.
- Enterprise agents require centralized governance. Moura wants business teams to help create automations while platform teams retain control over approved models, integrations, data access, spending, audit trails, and deployment.
