On this page

Eve Bouffard is Head of Design at Y Combinator, where she develops founder-facing products, websites and experiences. Her approach to AI-assisted creation centers on a simple shift: as generating software becomes easier, imagination, taste and judgment become more valuable.

From startup admissions to design leadership

Bouffard studied at McGill University and, in 2022, worked on Paire, a virtual-reality platform for human connection. At Y Combinator, she started in admissions, reviewed more than 25,000 startup applications, taught herself to code and moved into engineering. Her responsibilities expanded into internal tools, founder-facing products and design; she also collaborated with general partner Aaron Epstein on a redesign of Y Combinator’s homepage.

Her design philosophy emphasizes attention as much as aesthetics. In a public reflection on noticing, she argues that design begins with observing details, that observation improves through practice, and that this deeper attentiveness cultivates empathy.

Design ideas and experiments

  • Imagination engineering: Bouffard treats AI-generated software as a creative medium for rapidly testing ambitious ideas. Her AI-assisted design work at Y Combinator spans prototyping, branding and events.
  • Eve Thoughts: Inspired partly by Paul Graham’s essays and a former colleague’s separate Slack experiment, she created a channel to capture her evolving ideas, then transformed those notes into an experimental personal website. Its features include adjustable typography, translation, interactive visual effects and an evolving design system.
  • Shape of Minds: Bouffard built an interactive tool comparing historical thinkers through their interests, routines and intellectual approaches. The project combines visual exploration with AI-generated summaries; its patterns are prompts for inquiry, not established causal conclusions.
  • Agent-readable design context: She maintains Markdown descriptions of voice and visual language alongside reusable components, checklists and structured glossaries, giving software agents practical context for producing more consistent work.

Her public projects include animated speaker cards, fluted-glass visual experiments and a SOTA-related website. Her Imagination Engineering talk also demonstrates smaller personal tools, including searchable emoji interfaces and concise AI-generated learning materials.
