AI code maintenance and transformation

Grit

Grit built AI agents to help software teams maintain and modernize existing codebases, including dependency upgrades, framework migrations, and refactoring. Developers specified tasks and received pull requests they could review and refine through feedback. Its GritQL language lets developers search and transform source code with declarative patterns, create custom lint rules, and apply automatic fixes across languages including JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, and Go.

Morgante Pell founded Grit in 2022, inspired by the work that breaking API changes created for Google Cloud customers. Grit combined AI agents with static analysis and deterministic rules, letting developers specify sensitive changes precisely. GritQL made code patterns expressible without learning abstract syntax tree internals. In 2025, Honeycomb and Pell donated its repositories to Biome, which took responsibility for development. Pell joined Biome’s volunteer maintainers, and GritQL powers its custom lint-rule plugins.

Grit raised a $7 million seed round in 2023, led by Founders Fund and Abstract Ventures. That year, the company reported saving thousands of development hours for beta customers including Faire and PromptLayer. Honeycomb completed its acquisition of Grit in April 2025, announcing plans to sunset the standalone product and incorporate its agents into Honeycomb while keeping GritQL open source. Pell joined Honeycomb’s engineering team to lead AI development combining codebase knowledge with observability data.
