AI developer tools and program optimization

cmpnd

cmpnd builds developer tools for creating, deploying, and optimizing AI programs with DSPy. Its dspy-cli turns DSPy programs into HTTP APIs, giving application developers a standard project layout, generated endpoints, and Docker configuration. Developers can define functions such as summarization or content tagging, test them locally, and expose them as services that other applications call.

Co-founder and CEO Drew Breunig leads the company. Its engineering contributions include Flex, a DSPy module implemented during an internship at cmpnd and introduced in 2026. Flex exposes program code as well as instructions to the GEPA optimizer, allowing a model to write helper functions, decompose tasks, and route inputs between deterministic code and language-model calls. Generated code runs in a sandboxed interpreter by default, while the resulting program can be saved, inspected, and compared across revisions.

cmpnd’s tooling fits into developers’ existing application infrastructure. Distributed under the MIT license, dspy-cli provides a FastAPI server, OpenAPI specifications, and optional MCP support. Developers can configure different models for different programs and deploy the generated Docker setup on cloud services such as Fly, Render, or AWS.
