Consumer electronics retail and technology services
Best Buy
Best Buy sells consumer electronics and appliances, combining shopping in stores and online with advice, delivery, installation, technical support and repair. Geek Squad provides in-home and in-store technical support, helping customers use and maintain their technology. Its business also includes an online Marketplace in the U.S. and Best Buy Ads, a retail media network. Repair, trade-in and recycling programs extend its services beyond the initial purchase.
Richard Schulze and James Wheeler founded the company in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1966 as the audio specialty store Sound of Music; it adopted the Best Buy name in 1983. Corie Barry remains CEO, with Jason Bonfig selected to succeed her following her October 31, 2026 departure. Among its engineering contributions, API Playground lets students and educators practice REST API operations locally using a historical dataset of more than 50,000 products and store information. It is an educational environment, not access to the live catalog.
Best Buy reported $41.7 billion in revenue in fiscal 2026, which ended in January 2026. At fiscal year-end, it operated 1,068 stores and employed approximately 82,000 people in the U.S. and Canada. The company trades on the New York Stock Exchange under BBY.
